Poor But Sexy – Hotter Than A Poptart

If ya’ll wanna get funky with me put your hands in the air. This came up on the iPhone and caused me to groove out at work to the strange looks of my office mates. You can grab the whole record for from the group’s bandcamp page.

Happy Trendy – Old Friends[Good]

via Head Underwater. For those of you still grieving the loss of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone I give you your Nicorette, complete with cheap keyboard and soft spoken lyrics. Happy Trendy is from the even colder north of Edmonton and is a side project of chillwave artist Kumon Plaza, aka Dylan Khotin-Foote. Fans of the aforementioned defunct band will most likely find a lot like in Dylan’s simple keyboard songs with similar chilly undertones. The best part about the whole deal is that the album, Old Friends, is available for free streaming and download over at his bandcampe page. So go listen and enjoy.

Bicentennial Bear – All I Want For Christmas (Is an Afghan Wigs Reunion)

From the excellent A Very Ohio Christmas compilation. Out of all the Christmas music thats been flooding my way this is my favorite. A bit tounge in cheek and it hates on “bearded folk-rock”, what’s not to like. Jump over to the bandcamp to download the song or whole album and listen to good music while helping out a good cause. Yay.

Sea of Bees – Feliz Navidad

“Feliz Navidad” has to be one of my least favorite Christmas songs ever. I always associate it with the Florida-Keys-boatin’ stylings of Jimmy Buffett and hear it to many times over the holiday for my own good. Thankfully, Sacramento native Julie Ann Bee and her solo act, Sea of Bees have graced us with folk-y version of the song that wipes some of the Hawaiian shirt filth off of it. You can pick your own copy of the digital 7″ which also contains an altertnate take of  the Sea of Bees song, “The Woods”, off of iTunes here. Proceeds from the record are donated to a charity deicated to preventing LGBT suicides. So download it and Merry Christmas, unless you’re Jimmy Buffett who is dead to me.

Donewaiting & Each Note Secure Present: A Very Ohio Christmas

Two of my favorite Ohio music blogs, Donewaiting and Each Not Secure, have teamed up to produce an album consisting of old, new, and obscure songs preformed by bands from all across Ohio. Some of my favorite acts from the state, including Super Desserts, You You’re Awesome, and No No Knots, contributed tracks to the record so it’s safe to say that it will warm you up better than a cup of hot coco. You can listen and purchase the album via bandcamp or take a listen to a track or two on the aforementioned blogs. All the proceeds from the record go to an Ohio organization helping the victims of sex trafficking. So give the record and download and celebrate Christmas the proper Ohio way, by watching a giant fiberglass walleye drop. Wait, that’s what I’m doing on New Years.

Daniel Martin Moore – New Album ‘In The Cool Of The Day’

Alerted to me via Each Note Secure and Buzzgrinder. Daniel Martin Moore’s collaboration with Ben Sollee, Dear Companion, will most likely finish the year as one of my top picks, so I’m quite excited to see that he’s releasing a new record on January 18 of next year. Martin Moore’s sound invokes the the hills of his native Kentucky and if you want an example of how modern bluegrass and folk can be interesting and emotional look no further than Daniel. You can listen and download the track “Dark Road” from the new album at SubPop. If this song is any indication, I’m expecting good things from the In The Cool Of The Day.

Say Hi – New Album ‘Um, Uh Oh’

On January 25th, one of my favorite artists, Say Hi, aka Eric Elbogen, will be releasing his seventh full length album Um, Uh Oh on Barsuk records. There’s also a slew of tour dates to boot that you can find here. If you can’t wait that long Mr. Elbogen as released a single of new song “Devil” as well as a cover of Violent Femmes “Kiss Off” over on iTunes so you can pick that up while you’re grabbing The Beatles in Mp3. He’s also posted a track here. On first listen I wasn’t that thrilled with the song but it’s growing on me with is simple guitar lines and lyrics, which is pretty much how it happens with every Say Hi record. I just can’t seems to quit the guy.

Bad Veins covering The Apples in Stereo

One of my biggest musical regrets of the year is going to be not taking the opportunity to hang out with my college friend Sebastien from Bad Veins as they were opening for Frightened Rabbit at The Filmore. There’s a whole story to that, that I won’t go into here, but sufficed to say I ended up kicking myself for not going. It’s small consolation then, that the band just recently released an excellent cover of The Apples in Stereo’s “Benefits of Lying (With A Friend)” free to download here. Now if the band would just get around to recording their next full length I would be even happier. What do you think guys?

John Vanderslice Releases Free E.P. – Green Grow The Rushes

Bay area indie hero and all around nice guy John Vanderslice is about as prolific as an artist can be (GBV Excluded) and just put out a free E.P. on his website. Haven’t had my own chance to listen yet but knowing Mr. Vanderslice it’s full of bittersweet tunes and possibly mentions San Francisco explicitly.

You can grab it here. So head off, grab the “disc” in your preferred formant (Including uncompressed wav) and help John melt his web server.

Breakfast in Fur E.P.

Via Head Underwater and apparently re-blogged some elsewhere. A quirky little set of songs prefect to be the sound track for a lazy Saturday. There is actually a lot going on in each of the songs, but it somehow retains a very simple stripped down feel. Sort of has a Sufjan Stevens meets Sonic Youth/Yo La Tengo feel to it, which is definitely a compliment. This is what using “toy” sounding instruments in your compositions should sound like, light and airy not beat-you-over-the-head-hey-we’re-using-toy-instruments-aren’t-we-cool. Throw in some ambient background sounds and you got yourself a good sound going. Looking forward to what this band has in store for the future.

Of all the stuff I’ve been grabbing off my blogroll (that I’m just now catching up on) this is my favorite. The best news is that if you want to get your own copy you can download the EP for free at the Breakfast in Fur bandcamp page.
