The Seedy Seeds w/ Poor Things @ Sophia’s – 3/26/11

I’m really happy this night finally came into being. I’ve been expressing to both parties involved, for about two years now to varying degrees, that The Seedy Seeds would be a great band to have play the Sophia’s Thai Kitchen porch. I was quite pleased then that the proprietors at Sophia’s were happy enough to book them and, afterward, the band confessed to having quite the good time. For myself I couldn’t have been happier considering this is the only time I have been able to see them that didn’t involve at least a cross town bus. The only way that it could possibly have been better would be if my little brother and best-dancing-bud would have been able to attend with me. I’m sure wherever The Seedy Seeds play  when they return to the area in the summer, I will be there.

The Seedy Seeds are from Cincinnati, Ohio and are not only one of my favorite bands from my former city, but are one of my favorites over all as well. The group combines folk instruments and a traditional sing-along feel with a backing track of full of quirky and danceable electronic beats. Drummer, Brian, adds to that, parts that seem to be far more complex than the minimal drum kit he plays would suggest, though it has gotten a bit more complex in terms of auxiliary percussion over the years. The band played songs from across their three albums with a bit of emphasis on their great new record, Verb Noun. I was really happy that the band played one of my favorite songs from their first record by request. See you guys in again in the summer.

Poor Things are from San Francisco a play a set of delicate songs with boy girl harmonies, guitar and a few plastic instruments. I sort of joked in my head that the blue-plastic xylophone the band sported is almost the official instrument of S.F. as I’ve seen quite a few bands from the city sport it. In all honesty, I don’t recall as much from the set as I would like to as friends showed up to see the Seeds, distracted me, and I myself was a bit too excited for what was to come. I’m not against giving them a fair shake though, next time they come though.
